Hazlewoods Tax Adviser Set to Publish her First Book

Published: Thursday 18 June 2015

Megan Bourke, a tax adviser with Gloucestershire based accountants and business advisers Hazlewoods, is writing her first book.

Entitled: The Property Business – A Complete Tax Guide, it is due to be published by Claritax Books at the end of this year.

Megan, a member of Hazlewoods specialist property team, is no stranger to the written word and has been a regular contributor to the professional tax press.

Earlier this year she hit the headlines both locally and nationally when she revealed how the taxman had been overstepping the mark by demanding National Insurance (NI) payments from landlords who should not have to pay.

She brought the matter to light after HM Revenue & Customs wrote to one of her clients asking for backdated Class 2 NI contributions on rental property profits.

However Megan referred to a legal test case to show this was unjustified and eventually HMRC backed down and have since actually updated their guidance to reflect the points raised. It is thought many other landlords have faced similar demands.

In her work with Hazlewoods specialist property team most of Megan’s clients are property professionals and investors ranging from estate agents and developers to private landlords and those in the construction industry.

Based at Hazlewoods Cheltenham offices she has been with the firm for just under eight years.

Megan said: “I was recommended to the publishers and they asked me to produce the book. I am writing it now and publication is planned in December.

“It is hard work but very exciting. The book is aimed at tax and accountancy professionals but it will also be of interest to other property professionals.”

Earlier this year the tax team at Hazlewoods were finalists for the Tax Practice in a Regional Firm category at the 2015 Taxation Awards.
