For our next spotlight interview with the people at the heart of Hazlewoods, we catch up with Senior Manager Jo Smith in the property team.

How did your career with Hazlewoods start?

Although I joined in my current role only last July, my journey at Hazlewoods actually began 22 years ago. After college, I pursued my AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification, completing it at Hazlewoods. Later, I obtained my audit and professional qualifications at another firm in Cheltenham, moving on to run my own company independently for nine years whilst my children were still young. The close relationships with clients during that time were truly rewarding, and in fact some of those early clients have now come with me upon my return to Hazlewoods.

What is your role at Hazlewoods?

I hold the position of Senior Manager within the Business Solutions/SME team. My primary focus is leading on any property enquiries. Our typical clients possess property portfolios, rental properties and property developments, and I offer advice on taxation and ensure compliance with accounting regulations. My day primarily revolves around engaging with clients, and providing assistance and support to our junior team members, which is very satisfying.

What surprised you about working at Hazlewoods?

Coming back after 22 years, I have seen Hazlewoods expand significantly and become far more specialised than when I initially joined - the depth of sector knowledge is very impressive. What truly stands out is Hazlewoods’ commitment to investing in their employees, fostering growth, and providing support. I genuinely feel appreciated here.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I take a genuine interest in my clients. My work involves direct client interactions, often on a one-on-one basis, and I love finding out about their businesses. For instance, there’s one client who I found out has developed the block of flats that I once called home. Over my decades in accountancy, I’ve had the pleasure of learning about my clients’ aspirations and plans for the future.

What one thing do people not know about you?

I was once called up on stage at the Bristol Hippodrome by Derren Brown and hypnotised in front of thousands of people – you’ll have to ask me what I had to do!
