Julian has worked for Hazlewoods for 20 years. After his initial spell as a newly-qualified general practice senior in our Cheltenham office, he managed to escape into the academic world for 4 years (tutoring accountancy students) before being recaptured as the firm's first Recruitment & Training Manager, a role which he combined with that of VAT Manager for a number of years before finally giving up the unequal struggle and concentrating solely on the latter.
After successfully dodging examinations for the best part of 20 years, Julian sat the VAT Specialist route of the Institute of Taxation in 1998 and became one of the handful of people in the country to achieve the ATII (CTA) qualification via this route.
Julian's day to day work for Hazlewoods covers the full spectrum of VAT issues as they affect a varied portfolio of businesses - ranging from advising a small owner managed business on the merits or otherwise of the flat-rate scheme, through to analysing the VAT implications of multi-million pound property transactions. He has also represented clients in hearings before the VAT and Duties Tribunal.
Julian is a member of the West Midlands VAT Practitioners Group, and is currently the Chairman of the Severn Valley Branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He also captains the Hazlewoods cricket team, a position achieved through his ability to barbecue the post-match sausages and compose 'imaginative' match reports rather than any particular skill with bat or ball.
