#Hazlewoodspeople series: Jonny Sojka

Published: Monday 14 February 2022

People are at the heart of everything we do, which is why we enjoy getting to know more about those who make Hazlewoods. The next person in our #Hazlewoodspeople series features Jonny Sojka, Senior Manager, who specialises in the veterinary sector.

Why did you choose accounting and how did it come about?

Maths was always my strongest subject, so I decided to study it at university. However, after completing my first year, I found that university just wasn't for me and so I reconsidered my options.

I found that I could take the accountancy AAT route with my A Level results, which were in maths, economics, IT and business studies, and so embarked on that.

It was nice to be able to earn money whilst training, in comparison to some of my university friends who became accountants after graduating and then had a big student loan to pay off!

What do you enjoy about specialising in the veterinary sector and working at Hazlewoods as a whole?

I've liked getting to know a specific area well and building up knowledge of the industry. It means that I can provide clients with advice tailored to them and their business, and not just generic accountancy advice.

The work is very varied, which keeps each day interesting, from assisting with VAT returns through to practice sales. I enjoy being involved in the client's journey and seeing them progress, with the added bonus of hearing all about the animals and pets they take care of!

Everyone at Hazlewoods is very friendly and supportive – you can always have a laugh. I also found that the accountancy training offered at Hazlewoods is very good. They get the balance just right between work and study, with time off for exams.

Can you share any insights regarding the current veterinary sector?

There are certainly a lot of opportunities in the veterinary sector at the moment.

Corporate activity has provided practice owners with another exit option, rather than the traditional route of selling to an existing employee or owner, albeit we are still seeing more traditional routes being taken.

In more recent times during lockdown lots of people have bought pets, meaning practices have become extremely busy and are finding ways to manage new clients. Therefore, this is a great time for new start-ups and independent practices, as they are certainly in demand!

What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out in their career?

Ask lots of questions! Don't think that you should or do know it all at any stage, as there is always something new to learn. Times change, the business landscape changes, so you can't be stuck in your ways. You have to be open to learning new things.

Has there been a memorable moment in your career with Hazlewoods so far?

I would have to say passing my exams and becoming qualified. I trained as a school leaver, so that's about 4 to 5 years of study. So, once I had got that qualification under my belt, it felt really good – with the added bonus of a pay rise too!

What do you enjoy about the office locations?

I like Staverton's rural location. You have beautiful countryside and views right on your doorstep and from the office windows, surrounded by the lovely Cotswolds. You also have the option to venture into Cheltenham or Gloucester for a busier atmosphere – best of both worlds really.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

Going on walks, seeing family and friends, and playing squash or badminton. I've also picked up my guitar again. I used to be in bands as a kid and then life got in the way! So, when lockdown came along, it seemed like a good opportunity to give it another go.
