Property update: Spotlight on...Johanne Tisdale

Q&A with Johanne Tisdale, Associate Director at Hazlewoods.

Why did you choose accounting and how did it come about?

I actually wanted to train to be a vet. I loved being outdoors (and still do), caring for my horses and other animals, but soon realised that I wouldn’t be able to deal with certain aspects of the job.

I found my way into finance whilst working for an interior design company, I had invested a great deal of time into my own house, and so the job felt more like a hobby. It was a customer-facing role, but I also helped in the finance department and enjoyed it to the point that I decided to study for my accountancy qualifications. I did this in my own time after work and whilst caring for my horses. I now see how fortunate our trainees at Hazlewoods are in having study leave from work and time to sit exams.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

I manage the property portfolio for Partner, Nick Haines. The portfolio includes property investors, property developers, estate and letting agents, architects etc., mostly owner managed businesses that we have known for several years. We work with the clients to ensure they are meeting their annual filing requirements as well as providing other ad-hoc services during the year. I have regular touch points with the client throughout the year to ensure they are fully supported.

A lot of our clients come to us through referrals, needing one off specialist tax advice from Nick. We are then able to offer the full range of services to help their business. Approximately 55% of our clients are based in Gloucestershire, and so it is really interesting getting to know the local property businesses and discovering the challenges they face. We understand the ongoing changes happening within the sector and are always actively updating our clients on what they need to know to enable them to plan ahead.

What is keeping you busy lately?

Lots of new clients! We have recently onboarded ten property businesses, all part of the one larger group.

Tell us about what you enjoy outside of work?

Cycling, hiking, going to pony club and other equestrian events with my niece. I enjoy travelling - Italy is a big draw and my secret wish is that one day I will speak fluent Italian. I’m a long way off but I will keep trying!

Who would you most like to meet and why?

Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton – equally very inspiring leaders and what amazing conversations to be had.
