Tax update: HMRC time to pay arrangements

Published: Thursday 13 January 2022

HMRC is once again offering time to pay arrangements to taxpayers who face difficulty settling their tax liability in full at the end of this month. Under the arrangement, it may be possible to spread your liability with regular payments over a period of up to 12 months.

Where the payment due is less than £30,000, the time to pay arrangement can be set up online via your government gateway account – please see this link. In order to use this facility you must also not have any other payment plans or debts with HMRC and your tax return for 2020/21 must have been filed.  Please also note that the arrangement needs to be set up by 1 April 2022 and interest will be charged on the amount owed.

If the amount owed is greater than £30,000 or you cannot use the online facility, or if you require a longer period than 12 months to repay the debt, then it may still be possible to arrange a time to pay arrangement.  To do this you can call the Self Assessment Payment Helpline on 0300 200 3822.
