Veterinary update: Voluntary National Insurance deadline extended

Published: Thursday 6 April 2023

The Government has extended the voluntary National Insurance (NI) deadline to 31 July 2023 (previously 5 April 2023) to give taxpayers more time to fill in gaps or incomplete years in their NI record and help increase the amount they receive in state pension. In order to do this, voluntary NI contributions for the previous six tax years are typically permissible. This current extension enables individuals to make voluntary payments to fill up any gaps in their NI contribution history from 6 April 2006 to the present.

Gaps or incomplete years can occur when NI is not paid in a tax year, which could be due to low earnings, being unemployed or living/working outside of the UK. Gaps can mean an individual will not have enough years of NI contributions to get the full state pension. Eligible taxpayers can find out how to check their NI record, obtain a state pension forecast, decide if making a voluntary NI contribution is worthwhile for them and their pension, or make a payment by using this link or going to gov.uk.

Unfortunately we are unable to check this record on your behalf as you need to use your own personal government gateway login.
