Veterinary update: Spotlight on… Eleanor Richards

The Hazlewoods Veterinary team is made up of individual people that work together towards a common goal. In these series, we are putting the spotlight on some of them, so you can get to know us better. The next person in our series is Senior Manager, Eleanor Dear.

How did your career with Hazlewoods start and develop?

I joined the Veterinary team as an accounting and finance graduate in September 2013. Since then, I have qualified and remained in the Veterinary team, working my way through the grades to where I currently am as Senior Manager.

What drew you to Hazlewoods originally and what made you continue your career with the firm?

I was initially drawn by the graduate programme and the support provided as part of the ACA qualification, in addition to knowing that there would be other trainees which meant there would be plenty of company from peers. I have continued my career with Hazlewoods due to enjoying the variety of work provided, the career progression available and the friendliness of colleagues.

How has the firm changed since you joined?

Over the last 8 years, the company has grown a lot and there are also a number of new trainees each year. In recent times, initially in response to the COVID-19 pandemic but then implemented as ‘flexible’ working, our working week is now part in the office and part at home.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

I would say completing the ACA qualification and qualifying as a chartered accountant, as juggling work and study was definitely challenging at times!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety of work available and the diversity of clients ranging from sole traders to corporates.

Who has influenced or inspired you when it comes to how you approach your work?

I remember Partner, Mark Beaney saying to me – ‘always answer the next question before it is asked’ and that is how I always approach any advice or explanations I am giving.

What is keeping you busy at work?

Lots of different things! VAT reviews, yearend accounts reviews, valuations and completion accounts are on the list for this week!

What is something you learned in the last week?

I am a strong believer that you should be constantly learning. Last week I learnt about Employee Ownership Trusts from a query a client had raised. This was a new topic for me and involved doing some research and reading a file note that Partner, Suzanne had done from her conversation with the client.
